Pizzo, Sal

Born in Canicattini in 1934 Sal emigrated to Hartford in 1948 where he re-joined his parents on Front Street ( four rooms, five people) and recalls the harsh winters, and the friendly paesani. Most of Front Street apartments in those days had bathrooms but no shower facilities and Sal recalls walking to a poorly kept communal shower facility which he abandoned by joining the YMCA.

Contributing to the economic well being of the family from his arrival day, Sal worked as a 14 year old on the tobacco fields of Windsor, under the netting where breathing was difficult, for about $15 per week. And on Saturdays he would shine shoes to make another $10.

Sal's father was a shoemaker working at Brown-Thompson building in Hartford. He will become one of the founding members of the Italian American Stars.

Sal was also an excellent trumpet player and played in the Foot Guard and the Paul LaRosa band. Unfortunately his career was cut short by a botched operation on his ear which severed a facial nerve and made it impossible for him to perform.

Sal's career would take him thru several jobs at Underwood and Royal Typewriter while also attending evening school to become a licensed hair dresser. He went to work for G.Fox as a hair dresser in 1956 and opened his own shop in Hartford Bushnell Tower in1967 as well as owning a shop in Bloomfield. In 1970 he moved to Wethersfield and his shop is still operating at the same location where Sal still works a few hours in the morning.

Married since 1956 Sal has three children and nine grandchildren!

Nato a Canicattini nel 1934 Sal e’ emigrato a Hartford nel 1948 dove ha raggiunto i suoi genitoria Front Street (quattro camere, cinque persone) e ricorda gli inverni rigidi, e i paesani che ti aiutono ad inserirti. La maggior parte degli appartamenti di Front Street, in quei giorni avevano bagni ma non doccia e Sal ricorda di andare a piedi da un impianto mal tenuta doccia in comune, che ha abbandonato unendosi alla YMCA.

Contribuire al benessere economico della famiglia dal suo giorno di arrivo, Sal ha lavorato da 14 anni ai campi di tabacco di Windsor, sotto la rete in cui la respirazione è difficile, per circa $ 15 a settimana. E il sabato brillava le scarpe per fare un altro $ 10.

Il padre di Sal era un calzolaio che aveva un negozio presso il Brown-Thompson edificio a Hartford. Diventerà uno dei membri fondatori delle Italian American stars Club..

Sal è stato anche un trombettista eccellente e suonava nel Foot Guard e la band Paul LaRosa. Purtroppo la sua carriera è stata interrotta da un'operazione pasticciata sul suo orecchio che reciso un nervo facciale e ha reso impossibile per lui di poter continuare a suonare.

La carriera di Sal lo porta attraverso diversi lavori alla Underwood e Royal Typewriter ma allo stesso tempo di frequentare la scuola serale per diventare un parrucchiere. Egli andò a lavorare per G.Fox come parrucchiere nel 1956 e ha aperto il suo negozio di Hartford Bushnell Torre nel 1967 così come possedeva un negozio a Bloomfield. Nel 1970 si trasferisce a Wethersfield e il suo negozio è ancora in funzione nello stesso luogo in cui Sal lavora ancora un paio d'ore al mattino.

Sposato dal 1956 Sal ha tre figli e nove nipoti!
